CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has suggested to the State government to enact a law under which bribe-seekers can be arrested as a preventive measure.
There is no use in speaking about weeding out corruption, unless stringent statutes like the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Cyber Law Offenders, Drug Offenders, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders, Forest Offenders, Sand Offenders, Sexual Offenders, Slum Grabbers and Video Pirates Act and National Security Act are enacted to detain corrupt elements/officials under preventive detention law as a preventive measure, Justice N Kirubakaran said.
The judge was passing further interim orders on a writ petition from T Boopathy, praying for a direction to the sub-registrar office at Pammal to return the documents after registration.
When the matter came up on Tuesday, the government advocate returned the documents duly registered. And the judge noted that only after the petitioner had approached the court, the department officials, known for corruption, did their duty.
Irked over rampant corruption, the judge further said only when preventive detention is made, those who are indulging in corruption will be deterred. In this connection, the judge issued a set of questions to be answered by the authorities concerned.
