PUDUCHERRY: A day after two teachers of a private tuition centre were hacked by a gang of tipsy youth, the police on Monday arrested one Sampath and his six henchmen.

The incident at a tuition centre in Kottaimedu near Ariyankuppam had triggered a widespread outrage, with the locals picketing a police station, seeking immediate arrest of the assailants. The gang had repeatedly struck at the centre injuring two teachers and the relative of a girl student on Sunday.

Police said the incident happened when a  few youths in an inebriated condition entered the tuition centre and started abusing girls.

They questioned the teachers Tamilarasan and his brother Anburasu as to when the girls would be let out. When the teachers objected to this, both teachers were assaulted with iron rods and sickles. Police arrived on the scene and on seeing them the rowdies fled.

Over one hundred students of the tenth and eleventh standards, including girls, take classes in the centre. A few youth were known to have been teasing the girl students, standing in front of the tuition centre for sometime.

After the incident, the group struck within the hour again with the youth attacking the relative of a girl with weapons leading to a fracture in his leg.

Outraged, the public and the students picketed the Ariyankuppam police station and later put up road blocks late into the night. Senior police officials assured them of action, following which, they called off the stir. They also alleged that ganja is freely available in the Kottamedu and there has been no action to curb the menace.
