CHENNAI: A functionary of the Puratchi Bharatham (PB) party was hacked to death by a group of five unidentified assailants in broad daylight in Otteri in Kancheepuram district.

Police said N G Murugan, treasurer of the Kancheepuram unit of the party, was involved in the real estate business. He was going back to his residence in Mannivakkam on two-wheeler when the incident took place at around noon.

“Murugan was riding his two-wheeler when an Innova car came and hit his bike from behind,” said the investigating official. “He fell to the ground and when he got up, these men came and took out knives and hacked him on the head, neck and arm. They assaulted him and fled the scene.” Murugan was rushed to the Annai Arul Hospital in Perungalathur, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival due to serious blood loss.

“We have not been able to identify the five men who assaulted Murugan,” said the official. “Special teams have been formed to investigate the matter and find out the motive for the murder. It is too soon to comment on what could have been the reason for the act but robbery is ruled out as nothing was stolen from Murugan.” Murugan’s son lodged a complaint with the Otteri police and further investigations are on to nab the culprits.
