Form high power committee to clean up Adyar, Cooum: Madras HC

CHENNAI: Taking suo-motu cognisance of the pollution caused to Adyar and Cooum, the first bench of the Madras High Court directed the State government to restore the past glory of the two rivers by taking appropriate steps, including constitution of a high power committee.

The Bench of Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice R M T Teekka Raman directed the authorities, including PWD, to clean up the rivers into which drainage and sewage are let in. It also directed the government to set up sewage treatment plants at far off places. The sewage and waste water from the two rivers should be taken to the treatment plants in huge closed pipes. After treatment, the water can be used for agriculture. The State may approach the Centre for funds, the bench added.
