CHENNAI: Chief Minister ‘Edappadi’ K Palaniswami on Thursday announced starting new government law colleges at Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Ramanathapuram from the current academic year 2017-18. Already, the State has seven government law colleges and one self-financing law college.

The chief minister also allocated `6.81 crore towards the expenditure relating to appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff, library books, furniture and other requirements. Each college would get `2.27 crore and a separate special officer would be appointed for each college to undertake preliminary works for establishing them.

Admission to these colleges would be through the Dr Ambedkar Law University. For the three year and five year courses, 80 students for each would  be admitted from this year.

The chief minister’s announcement is in accordance with the policy of the State government  to establish required number of government law colleges in a phased manner to impart legal education at affordable cost. Since students belonging to these three districts do not have government law college in their vicinity, the government has decided to establish one each at the three district headquarters.
