CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government will soon introduce amphibious vehicles that can be used during floods to transport patients from inundated places or hospitals.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) is designing the vehicles, said Health minister C Vijaya Basker on Friday.

Speaking to reporters at the two-day workshop on Trauma Care Systems organised by National Health Mission-Tamil Nadu, he said the State government is working with IIT-M, which is designing the vehicle. “Soon, these vehicles will be added to the emergency service,” he said. Amphibious vehicles can travel on land as well as in water.

An MoU between Australia and Tamil Nadu government was also signed as part of the India-Australia Trauma Care Systems project during the workshop. Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) was chosen for India-Australia Trauma Care Systems project. As part of the project, the RGGGH trauma care will be improved.

As part of the project, the minister also launched Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI App), an internal app for trauma and accident cases reporting from the government hospitals.
