CHENNAI: To reduce power consumption at railway stations, Southern Railway (SR) has decided to replace the conventional lights and fans with energy-efficient LED lights and fans at 121 stations in six divisions.
To this effect, SR entered into a model energy performance agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL) on Tuesday. The project is to save about 83.72 lakhs of unit per annum, which amounts to `6.36 crore.
The agreement which was signed based on the Energy Service Company (ESCO) model, will be implemented at 121 stations covering A1, A and C category stations in six divisions in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They include Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Thiruvananthapuram, Dindigul, Salem, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Jolarpet, Kochi, Arakkonam, Kovilpatti, Katpadi and Palakkad.
Under ESCO model, the installation cost shall be borne by EESL and the resultant savings from energy efficiency projects will be used to repay EESL investments on deemed savings basis.
“The existing lights will be replaced with LED lights and energy efficient fans would put into use in the place of old fans. In addition, five-star rated inverter- based air-conditioners will replace the conventional equipment,” said a railway press release.
