PUDUCHERRY: Almost a month after Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi travelled incognito to some parts of the town to assess safety of women, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy rode through several Assembly constituencies to "ascertain" the availability of amenities.

Narayanasamy was accompanied by Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan on a separate two-wheeler to the assembly segments last night.

"The purpose of the visit on two wheelers was to ascertain the availability of amenities to the people," he told reporters here today.

"I had received complaints from several quarters that the street lights are not functional.. I could see only 20 percent of the street lamps were not burning.. This would be rectified without delay," he said.

He also said he rode through about a dozen segments and noted the deficiencies in availability of amenities to the public.

While Kiran Bedi happens to be the first Lt Governor of Puducherry to ride through the town, Narayanasamy is also the first Chief Minister to travel to Assembly segments on his two wheeler dispensing with all paraphernalia.

On August 18, Bedi had rode pillion on a scooter, driven by a staff of Raj Nivas (her office), with her dupatta (shawl) covering her face to assess the security available for women at night in the Union Territory.

At the end of her visit She had tweeted, "Puducherry streets are safe for women even at night."

Puducherry Assembly constituencies are small geographically and are situated in close proximity to one and another.
