CHENNAI: The Meteorological Department on Friday issued a heavy rainfall warning for 15 districts in the southern and northern Tamil Nadu.

As per the prediction, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Theni and Virudhunagar districts in south Tamil Nadu and Vellore, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, the Nilgiris, Salem, Tiruchy and Coimbatore districts in north Tamil Nadu.

S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, has attributed the rainfall activity to a trough of low pressure over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka, now lying over the Comorin (Kanniyakumari) area and neighbourhood. He said rainfall would continue till Saturday.

As per the rainfall data recorded for 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday, Coonoor in the Nilgiris district recorded highest rainfall in the State with 10 cm, followed by Kothagiri (Nilgiris) 8 cm, Sivagiri (Tirunelveli) 7 cm, K bridge (Nilgiris) 5 cm,  Sengottai (Tirunelveli) 4 cm, and Srivilliputhur (Virudhunagar) 3 cm.

Noted weather blogger Pradeep John said though the rainfall activity is usual during peak summer, it has concentrated too much in southern districts this season.

Widespread rains are reported in south Tamil Nadu and also in the Nilgiris. Pollachi got some rains on Friday. Radar imagery shows massive ball of clouds converging over south Tamil Nadu.
