CHENNAI: Road rage between two bus drivers took two lives and left five persons injured near Chengalpattu on Sunday afternoon. Police said a private college bus was running on the Chengalpattu outer ring road when a government bus headed to Tiruchy was repeatedly honking from behind.

“Soon both drivers started speeding and were repeatedly overtaking each other.  When they were near JCK Nagar, the college bus lost control and hit two persons - a motorcyclist and a person waiting at a bus stop,”  said a police officer privy to the case. The college bus subsequently skidded down the roadside slopes and damaged electric poles.

S Santhanam, 50, a  resident of Minjur, who was riding the motorcycle, was killed on the  spot. Valarmathi, a resident of Kancheepuram, who was waiting at the bus  stop, succumbed to  injuries in the Chengalpattu government hospital Police said the college bus was transporting people to attend a wedding function of a family known to a senior  college official. Five people travelling in the bus were injured.
The government bus driver fled from the spot. Police are further investigating.

Woman killed in alms-seekers’ dispute

A 43-year-old alms-seeking woman was allegedly killed by another alms-seeker on Saturday night in a scuffle that broke out over sharing of the day’s collection. Police said Shanthi and around 20 alms-seekers were on the platform near Washermenpet railway station around 7 pm when an argument broke out among them. In the melee, she was allegedly pushed to the ground by one Raja.

“The group usually travels in trains and seeks alms. At the end of the day, they pool in their collections and take equal share. But on Saturday, Shanthi contributed very less and Raja alleged that she was hiding money. A fight followed, in which she was killed,” said an officer.
