PERAMBALUR: Work to lay a road in Elambalur has begun after cricketer and former Rajya Sabha member Sachin Tendulkar released the fund he had promised in response to a request from the Nashik district collector who belongs to the village here.

“Despite being very close to Perambalur, the village is not on any important route. Used only by the villagers, it would get very less government attention. Now, the laying of the asphalt road will greatly help the residents,” social activist Durai Rajiv Gandhi told Express.

Before the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure, the cricketer had consented to grant Rs 21.7 lakh from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development fund to lay a 500-metre-long road in the Golden City locality, after B Radhakrishnan, collector of Nashik district, brought the poor condition of the road to his attention.

Perambalur Collector V Shantha inspected the progress of the road work on June 28. She was accompanied by the project director for rural development, D Srithar, and MP Josephine Nirmala. The road will be two-layered and will have 3.75 metre width and 20 cm thickness.
