Tamil Nadu State Board students get 62 per cent of medical seats

The counselling for MBBS and BDS admissions began on July 1 with counselling for special category quota. The counselling for general category began on Monday.

CHENNAI: The State Board students managed to get 62 per cent of seats while CBSE students got 32 per cent and others got four per cent of seats during the first phase of counselling for MBBS and BDS courses till Tuesday, according to the data from the selection committee of the Directorate of Medical Education on Wednesday.

The counselling for MBBS and BDS admissions began on July 1 with counselling for special category quota. The counselling for general category began on Monday. Till Tuesday,  a total of 1,421 seats in MBBS and BDS were allotted.

“Among 1,421 seats, the State Board students got  892 seats, CBSE students 460 and other board students 69 seats,” Dr G Selvarajan, secretary, selection committee, told Express.

In terms of percentage, the State Board students got 62.77 per cent, CBSE 32.37 per cent and other board students 4.9% of seats.

The selection committee said that only 12 students from government and government-aided schools had figured in the 1 to 3,000 rank list and 16 students in the 3,001 to 5,000 rank. But, the chances of the 16 students getting MBBS seats are less.
