Tamil Nadu: Teachers fix innovative urine basins in government school

VILLUPURAM: At a time when the State machinery is grappling with fund crunch to in the pursuit of equipping every school with toilets, teachers at a government school near Gingee are showing the way by building loos in a pocket-friendly way. Using discarded water cans, the teachers created urine basins to help schoolboys, who hitherto were relieving themselves out in the open.

According to sources, the government panchayat union middle school in Seranur under Gingee taluk of Villupuram district has 114 students. While the girls had access to toilets, loos for boys was conspicuous by its absence.

During one of the discussions abou the issue, one of the teachers had a bright spark on using basins made of used water cans. Immediately, they decided to set up a first-of-its-kind toilet for students by shelling money out of their own pockets.
