Tamil Nadu: Government college teachers’ pay hiked

CHENNAI: After nearly a decade, Tamil Nadu government on Friday revised the pay of government college teachers. The revised pay of an entry-level teaching staff (an assistant professor) has been increased to Rs  70,000 from Rs 55,000 per month. The salary of all teaching staff have increased by 18-24 per cent, according to the order.

The average salary of teachers would be roughly Rs 1.5 lakh, according to the revised scale of pay based on Seventh Pay Commission recommendations, as directed by University Grants Commission (UGC).
“The changes would take notional effect from January 1, 2016 and monetary effect from October 1, 2017,” the order said. The would mean that teachers would be losing arrears for 21 months.

The basic pay of assistant and associate professors is fixed at Rs 57,700 and Rs 79,800 respectively. For professors, it’s been fixed at Rs 1.4-1.8 lakh per month.

Dearness, city compensatory, house rent and medical allowances would be paid over and above the basic pay.
