THOOTHUKUDI: Even as the district administration is taking efforts to remove the sulphuric acid from the Sterlite's Copper smelter unit, the anti-Sterlite movement activists condemned it, terming it as a ploy to begin the maintenance work at the copper smelter premises.

Activist Thamil Manthan said a mere GO could not shut down such a large scale unit. "As policy decision of the state government and a resolution at the legislative assembly would strengthen the GO of closure. The removal of sulphuric acid before drafting a policy decision on the operations of copper smelter is an act of beginning maintenance works," he condemned.
