CHENNAI: Since the beginning of this month, the #MeToo movement, which took the nation by storm, struck Tamil cinema, with a few prominent names including lyricist Vairamuthu and actor-filmmaker Arjun being accused as harassers.

The Tamil cinema industry has faced a whirlwind of accusations since then and a lot more names surfaced as the days progressed. Taking cognisanze of this, the Nadigar Sangam had already promised to create an internal complaints committee to address such issues. Delivering on the promise, Nasser, the president of the Nadigar Sangam has announced that such a committee would be formed adhering to the Vishaka guidelines.

Speaking after a specially convened general body meeting, he further added that women would constitute the majority of this committee and that there will be a psychiatrist present in the panel. Nasser assured that this panel will approach the complaints without any gender bias. Urging the Producers’ union to facilitate another panel by bringing other film organisations like FEFSI, Directors’ Union and Nadigar Sangam into the fold, Nasser said that this panel will ensure that the concerns and self-respect of all film employees are safeguarded even in the shooting spots.
