NAGAPATTINAM:  Renovation of the centuries-old Nagore Dargah in the district is likely to commence in a month’s time as the authorities concerned announced that tenders would be floated to undertake the works at a cost of Rs 2 crore.

Following the state government allocation of around Rs 4 crore for the dargah, the shrine’s management has decided to take up renovation work using the first tranche of Rs 2 crore. The dargah had sought '73 crore for its complete renovation and facility improvement.

"Some of the structures such as two sepulchres and a couple of prayer halls are over two centuries old and are dilapidated beyond repair. They have to be demolished completely and reconstructed. Some of the structures such as the stone hall can be renovated without demolition.

We are planning to start the works in a month. We will gradually renovate and upgrade the structures with the support of the state government," said Syed Mohammed Khalifa Sahib, the president of the dargah. Dargah office bearers said bids for the works would be floated as part of the project for Rs 2 crore.

Further, in view of its high consumption costs, the administration has planned to make the dargah fully powered by solar energy. Plans are also on to build facilities such as hospitals, institutions and community halls. Facilities and features would be gradually added over the years by seeking the support of the state government for grants, administration sources said.

Meanwhile, Nagapattinam MLA J Mohamed Shanavas visited the dargah and inspected the places to be renovated and reconstructed. On additional facilities, the MLA told the dargah authorities that he would pitch for grants in a phased manner.
