MADURAI:  The internal committee of the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), on Friday, interrogated the assistant professor of the Institute of Anaesthesia Department Dr Syed Thahir Hussain, based on a complaint relating to verbally abusing girl students.

According to sources, the issue came to light after the students lodged a complaint to the department officials on May 6 alleging that the professor verbally abused them. Based on the complaint the committee inquired about the incident.

The committee comprises the vice principal of Madurai Medical College Dr V Dhanalakshmi, two nursing superintendents, two male professors, and one professor from each department of Gynaecology and Anaesthesia, sources added.

Refuting the allegation, Dr Hussain said that the complaint against him is purely motivated by a personal vendetta against the State President of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) Dr K Senthil, and added that he had raised his voice against the president.

In response, President K Senthil, stating that he barely knows him, asked why he would hold any grudge against the doctor. He also added that the doctor has dragged his name into the issue only to divert the attention from the allegation.

GRH Dean Dr A Rathinavel said that further decisions will be taken only after receiving the committee report, which will be submitted to him in a couple of days.
