KANNIYAKUMARI: Residents from Kottilpadu coastal village have urged the government to take steps for preventing coastal erosion by the end of the month. The village, situated near Colachel fishing harbour, has been affected by the rough sea every year from May till August. The 2004 tsunami claimed many lives in the coastal village and displaced many families.

Kottilpadu Fisheries Cooperative Society President A Joan Lenin told TNIE that each year, the village loses some areas of the coast due to the erosion. The existing groynes cannot prevent it. We have been demanding the authorities to initiate action, but nothing has been done so far, he added.

DMK councillor of Colachel municipality Captain Johnson also urged the authorities to start the work for preventing sea erosion before the sea turns rough. At least, temporary measures must be taken, he added.
