174 Engg Colleges Do Not Make the Cut

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government finally had its say as most of the substandard colleges got weeded out of the list of the eligible affiliated private engineering and pharmacy colleges for the admissions in the current academic year.

The web counselling for the EAMCET engineering admissions will commence on August 17 (Sunday) and continue till August 25.

In the renewal list of affiliated  colleges issued on Saturday, as many as 174 private engineering colleges out of the 315 existing colleges in Osmania University region did not find their names. Even the number of eligible private pharmacy Colleges came down to a mere 61 from 146 in the list released.  Which means more than 50 per cent of the private engineering and pharmacy colleges under OU region are not eligible this year for intake of students for courses being offered by them. 

EAMCET camp officer Raghunath, the list of colleges eligible for counselling is renewed every year before EAMCET counselling. JNTU-H in OU region, JNTU-K in AU region, JNTU Anantapur in SVU region conduct inspection of engineering and pharmacy colleges before the counselling begins for renewing the list of eligible colleges. Various parameters are taken into consideration during the inspection of colleges, which include strength of faculty, qualifications, labs, libraries and other infrastructure facilities in place along with other related aspects.

Following inspection, a list is prepared and submitted to the State Council for Higher Education, which in turn gets forwarded to EAMCET admissions committee, which gives it to EAMCET camp office, who releases the list. As per the renewed list, the number of seats in the private affiliated colleges in OU region decreased to 85,455 from 1,84,575 and in case of pharmacy, seats got decreased to 10,910 from 18,564. 

However, in the other two university regions - AU and SVU, there was not much decrease in either  number of private engineering colleges or private pharmacy colleges.  In AU region number of private engineering colleges in the list decreased to 206 from 212 and in SVU region to 113 from 118. In case of private pharma colleges, number of colleges in the list stood at 75 against the previous 85 in AU region and 36 against previous 37 in SVU region.  Similarly the seats also got decreased marginally in those two university regions compared to OU region.
