HYDERABAD: Major bus depots in Telangana are still devoid of Closed Circuit Cameras to record movements of suspicious elements -- be it property offenders or anti-social elements or people moving on the bus depot premises.
It was CC Cameras at Suryapet bus depot which captured images of two terrorists who shot down two policemen on April 2.
Installation of CCTV cameras would go a long way in making the job of the police easy. The surveillance system would help the police nail down the culprits easily.
Some of the bus depots which witness heavy traffic -- Jadcherla, Siddipet, Zaheerabad, and others -- do not have the surveillance system. Stating that the cameras does not only help in capturing images of wrongdoers, RTC fficials said even day-to-day operations can be monitored from the headquarters if surveillance cameras are installed.
“Low cost cameras can be installed at the depots. But the quality of the images captured will be of poor quality. If the devices were to be installed, they should be of good resolution,” said an official.
Another official opined, “By sitting in my cabin, I could monitor situation in different bus depots. Operation of buses, movement of passengers can be known if the devices are installed”.
It is learnt that policemen have asked the regional managers to equip the depots with the CCTVs. Back in the city, the devices which were capturing grainy images at Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) were identified, and they would be replaced with high resolution cameras. At present, there are about 21 cameras at MGBS and there are proposals to increase the number to 28.
RTC Did not Fund CCTVs in Suryapet Depot
If not for the insistence by Suryapet local police and funds from people, images of the terrorists would not have been captured. It is learnt that the CC cameras at Suryapet bus station were not funded by the Road Transport Corporation, but by other sources. It was only because the police were firm that the cameras have to be installed at the depot, the images were recorded.
