HYDERABAD: The government is likely to appoint a senior IPS officer to monitor the progress of the ongoing investigation into the drug case being probed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the excise department’s enforcement wing.

Sources told Express that top police officials were considering appointing a senior police officer of the rank of inspector-general (IGP) or additional director-general (ADGP) to monitor the progress in the investigation currently headed by excise enforcement director Akun Sabharwal.

Sabharwal submitted status reports to the government on the drug cases such as cases registered, details of the arrested persons, links with Tollywood fraternity and peddlers based in foreign countries. Following this, top police officials are understood to have discussed the possibility of appointing a senior IPS officer to monitor the cases.

“The matter of appointing a senior IPS officer to monitor the drug cases is under consideration. In the discussions, the names of some senior IPS officers holding the rank of IGP and additional DGP who had worked on similar cases previously have cropped up. A decision will be taken after the CM is back from Delhi,” sources said.

Earlier, the government had appointed an additional DGP-rank officer to monitor the investigation into Nayeem’s case.
