Telangana's Koti Women’s College to be upgraded into women’s University

HYDERABAD: The University College for Women, popularly known as Koti Women’s College, one of the landmarks of Hyderabad, is all set to become the first university for women in Telangana state. As the Padmavathi Women University located in Tirupati in the erstwhile united state went to the truncated Andhra Pradesh post-bifurcation, the Telangana government has decided to upgrade Koti Women’s College into a women’s university.

Deputy chief minister (education) Kadiam Srihari, during a surprise visit to the Koti Women’s College on Thursday, indicated that the college has all facilities to be developed into a university. “We will upgrade the college into a women’s university from the next academic year after getting nod from chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao,” he said.He sought a detailed report from the officials concerned on the infrastructure and facilities available with the institution so that it could be presented to the chief minister.
He interacted with students about the teaching faculty and other amenities available in the college.

Spread over 40 acres, the college is offering 42 courses. The minister, however, rued that the institution was not doing any research work. Earlier this week, the minister had also raised the issue of a women’s university for Telangana in a meeting with Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.As part of its centenary celebrations, Osmania University has been sanctioned `200 crore and Koti Women’s College, which is affiliated to the OU presently, was allotted Rs 37 crore, Kadiam said.

94-year-old college
The college was started in 1924. It was moved to its present location belonging to James Achilles Kirkpatrick’s mansion Koti Residency in 1949. The college offers graduate and postgraduate courses for women. The undivided AP has Padmavathi Mahila University. Post-bifurcation it went to truncated AP and Telangana has no women’s varsity. At present the college is offering 42 courses.
