HYDERABAD: A 28-year-old notorious habitual offender allegedly killed his paternal grandmother after he was asked to give up his room in the house to his younger brother who is set to get married soon. Police say he committed the crime believing the death will stall celebrations in the family for at least one year and his shelter would remain safe.

Purani Srikanth is the eldest of three brothers in his family. Living together with parents in a 2BHK house, he and one of his brothers who were married occupied the two bedrooms. Srikanth’s parents asked Srikanth to vacate his room, as Sridhar, their youngest son, was getting married.

Srikanth was now worried about losing his room. He thought that if someone dies in the family, there will be no celebrations for a year. He then allegedly hatched a plan to kill his grandmother Peddamma who lived with his aunt.  On Saturday night, when 80-year-old Peddamma was alone at home, Srikanth smothered her to death with a pillow. He also stole her gold jewellery. Based on CCTV footage, police arrested Srikanth.
