Coast Guard mistakenly opens fire at fishermen

RAMESWARAM : In a freak accident, Coast Guard personnel opened fire at Rameswaram fishermen by mistake, while they were fishing on Monday.Indian Coast Guard vessel ICGS Rani Abbakka intercepted a mechanised boat as it was crossing the maritime border. The Coast Guard vessel was said to have been patrolling along the Indian Coast.

When the mechanised boat failed to turn up, the Coast Guard, who approached the mechanised boat in three fibre boats opened fire with rubber pellet bullets suspecting they had intruded into the border. They were surprised to find Indian fishermen on board and the boat five nautical miles away from Rameswaram coast.During the shooting, one Antony Raj sustained injuries. The incident took place when they were fishing in the Indian coast after being chased away by Sri Lankan navy.
