Maha Labourer Sells Kidney in Lanka

Kiran Tare

A complaint of cheating lodged by daily-wage earner Santosh Gawli in Akola police station in Vidarbha has exposed an international kidney racket and exploitation by moneylenders in the farmer suicide-prone region of Maharashtra.

In his complaint on December 3, Gawli said local PAN card agent Devendra Shirsat had cheated him of `1 lakh. Police were puzzled when Gawli said he had travelled to Sri Lanka to sell his kidney. They later stumbled upon an international racket of human kidney smuggling.
