Cong making most of demonetisation

NEW DELHI: Delhi Congress has taken the rising chorus against demonetisation as an opportunity to reach out to people ahead of municipal polls in Delhi. Under Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken’s leadership, party has launched ‘Jansadhan Sabha’ and ‘Note Pe Charcha’ drives to educate common man on ill-effects of currency change.

Congress leaders swung into action after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the implementation of demonetisation drive as “monumental mismanagement” and a case of “organised loot and legalised plunder” in the Rajya Sabha.

Maken also supported the former PM’s views on the way demonetisation has been brought can weaken and erode the people’s confidence in the currency and banking system.

“We have started meeting people standing in the bank and the ATM queues to educate and inform them about the effects of demonetisation on economy,” said former Congress legislator Mukesh Sharma.
“We have also published pamphlets with all 10 points mentioned by Manmohan Singh and has started distributing them among people,” he added.

According to Congress workers, the Delhi unit has conducted over 300 meetings in which newsletter containing opinions of senior leaders, including ex-finance minister P Chidambaram and party vice -president Rahul Gandhi have been given to people.

“On one side people are dying standing in queues, on the other side unaccounted new currency is being seized. This is not accepted,” said the leader.
Apart from this, the party held ‘Note Pe Charcha’ drive at 280 locations near banks.
