NEW DELHI: With the vision to create Newton’s and Aryabhatta among the next generation, the Delhi government on Saturday conducted the first ever interactions between parents and teacher, commonly known as PTM, in around 1,000 senior secon-dary government schools in and around Delhi.

The mood among the teachers, parents and students was exciting, and they came in large numbers braving the incessant rain. It was a special occasion for parents from economically weaker section. For such interactions helped them feel empowered in the real sense. “I could not have missed this opportunity as I had a lot of queries and suggestions,” said Sandhya, mother of Roshan Tyagi (Class 8) of Government Boys Senior Secondary School in Kalkaji.

The principle said, “We have had registered over 90 per cent attendance from the parents and would compile the interactions and report it to the Delhi Government.” They are barred from interacting with the media by the government.

A teacher of Government Boys High School in Harkesh Nagar, Okhla said many parents were concerned about the standard of English and Maths taught here. A parent even suggested separate maths classes for weaker students. The interactions were lively and reflected the collective aspirations of parents to provide better education to their wards, he said. The PTM were conducted in two shifts. “More than 70 per cent parents showed up for the meeting,”said Sandhya Singh, vice-principal Sarvodaya Vidyalaya. A letter from State Education Minister Manish Sisodia, detailing the achievements of the government in education was also distributed among the parents.

Meanwhile, the death of a 12-year-old clouded the success of the PTM. Karishma, a Class 7 student of Senior Secondary School, Khyala, committed suicide as she was upset with her teacher for scolding her infront of her mother and friends, police said.
