Ill health of guru mata triggers changes at Nirankari Helm

NEW DELHI:  With the sudden demise of Hardev Singh, the Sant Nirankari Mission followers are in for some surprises in the sect’s administration. The spiritual leader’s wife, Savinder Kaur, 59, has been named the next mission head, but her health is a major concern as she is undergoing chemotherapy sessions.

Earlier, the guru’s youngest daughter was tipped to be the Nirankari head.

Sources close to her revealed that Sandeep Khinda, eldest son-in-law of the sect guru, will take charge of the administrative works. Khinda is likely to play a bigger role in the mission in the coming years.

“Keeping in mind her (Kaur) health, there might be a new approach towards the functioning of the mission. There are new things in store, but for that we will have to wait, since there has been no communication from her side about what should be the way forward. Neither do we know the agenda on which we have to work on. It is totally her prerogative to give the reins of administration to whoever she wants,” said a source in the executive council.

Since the formation of the Sant Nirankari Mission in 1929, this will be the first time that a woman will be heading the sect. Savinder belongs to Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. She did her primary education from Convent of Jesus and Mary School, Mussoorie, and enrolled herself at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College for a brief period, before getting married to the spiritual guru in 1975.

Hardev Singh and his second son-in-law died in a car crash in Montreal, Canada on May 13.
