NEW DELHI: To sensitise the youth about their legal rights, the Delhi Legal Service Authority (DLSA) in association with the Delhi University Community Radio (DUCR) have invited 11 High Court judges for 11 episodes on 11 topics, including sexual harassment, victim compensation, arrest, domestic violence and consumer protection.
“The courts need to be made more accessible to provide real ‘access to justice’. We have adorned the new role of working in dissemination of legal knowledge among people. DUCR, which is run by student volunteers, will enlighten marginalised masses with its radio programmes,” said Chetna Singh, a judge who spoke about sexual harassment at workplace.
The judges will talk about the issues and answer queries of radio jockeys. The first episode was broadcasted Saturday night at the DU north campus.
“The objective of the project is to make aware, the students and staff of each college about the basic legal literacy. People know that the courts provide transparent judgment but not many know how to approach court,” said Mohit Gupta, project leader and third year LLB student at DU.
The varsity has also written to the Ministry of Broadcasting for phase two of the project, in which they will connect a loop with the community radio in the country. In the 30 to 40-minute session, student volunteers ask questions to the judges, said Gayathri Mani, a student volunteer. The radio show is available on 90.4 MHz within a radius of 10-12 km.
“It is important that the students get relevant legal information on time. DUCR and DSLSA have taken the right step in this direction by launching a series of radio programmes on legal issues,” said Monika Saroha, another judge, who spoke on senior citizens’ rights.
Managed by a team of 400 students, the DUCR was established by former Union Minister Kapil Sibal in 2007.
