NEW DELHI: Don't be surprised if you find a Delhi Police personnel roaring past you on a Harley-Davidson. Delhi Police, like their Gujarat and Kolkata counterparts, is planning to add the high-end motorcycle to its fleet of Pulsars and Apaches.
A proposal to upgrade to the expensive Harley-Davidsons has been received by Delhi Police Headquarters. It seeks to buy five 750-cc Harley-Davidson Street motrocycles. Each Harley-Davidson Street costs `5.14 lakh (ex-showroom), much less that a Toyota Innova, which Delhi Police uses as Interceptor. The force recently bought 11 Interceptors at `23 lakh per vehicle.
“Being the capital police, it is the need of the hour to have such motorcycles in our fleet, which have special features. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are one of the best in responding to any emergency services and chasing. These bikes can be used to escort VVIPs, foreign delegations visiting Delhi and other ceremonial functions,” the proposal says.
A source in Delhi Poplice said “the financial burden of these motorcycles won’t be much. We have purchased night Interceptors, PCR vans, Emergency Response Vehicles, etc, which are more expensive than the total cost of five motorcycles. These can redefine the image of Delhi Police at a very nominal cost”.
Harley-Davidson will modify the Streets for Delhi Police. Such motorcycles are famous as “law enforcement motorcycles”. The Street’s V-Twin engine can propel it from 0-100 kmph in under 7.1 seconds.
