THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shredding seems to be the best way to deal with plastic, a major non-biodegradable hindrance to waste management. The machine runs on electricity and can shred plastic into tiny bits, which then can be used for various applications.
The Corporation will install a new shredding machine that runs on a 20 HP motor at Muttathara. Mayor V K Prasanth said the unit will start functioning after it gets power connection from KSEB. The civic body also has plans to revive the existing unit at Palayam.
Manickal becomes the first panchayat in the district to start a shredding unit to manage plastic waste. Minister for Local Self Government K T Jaleel inaugurated the facility installed with the support of Suchitwa Mission. He said it is essential to carry out sanitation work with people’s participation. “There is a need to set up more plastic shredding machines.
Shredded plastic can be used for constructing roads. Powered plastic has many uses. We should promote such industries,” said Jaleel. Kudumbasree workers will collect plastic from homes and process it at the facility near Lekshmipuram.
