All the 11 convicts serving life sentences for the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case in 2002, during the Gujarat riots, walked free from the Godhra sub-jail on August 16 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. The release of the convicts came as a shock to many. Over 6,000 citizens, including human rights activists, urged the Supreme Court to revoke the remission of sentences for 11 men convicted in the Bilkis Bano case. On March 3rd, 2002, Bilkis Bano’s family was attacked by a mob at during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat. Bilkis Bano, who was five months pregnant at the time, was gang-raped and seven members of her family were killed. Here is a timeline of the Bilkis Bano case.
