COLOMBO:  Colombo High Court Judge Kumudini Wickramasinghe on Monday acquitted V Jaseeharan and his fiancee, V Valarmathy, who had been journalistic and business associates of J S Tissainayagam, the well known Sri Lankan Tamil editor and columnist who was sentenced to 20-year RI in August this year for having close links with the LTTE.

“There is a doubt whether any sufficient evidence was presented to satisfy the court and whether the alleged confession was obtained voluntarily.

It is doubtful whether any evidence would be available in the future,” she said.

She observed that there was no confession made by the second accused, Valarmathy, and there was no evidence presented against her. Considering the application by the Attorney General, she ordered the acquittal of the two accused.

Meanwhile, the SC allowed the withdrawal of the Fundamental Rights petitions filed by the duo challenging their arrest, detention and torture by the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID).
