US lawmaker calls Pakistan a 'backstabbing nation'

A US Congressman called Pakistan a "backstabbing nation" on Monday, in a tweet that praised the US defense secretary's move to withhold $350 million in aid to India's neighbour.

Recently, US Defense Secretary James Mattis issued a notification to the US Congress reallocating the funds, and the defense department spokesman Adam Stump said at the time that Mattis wasn't able to certify that Pakistan "has taken sufficient actions against the Haqqani Network to permit full reimbursement of Fiscal Year 2016 Coalition Support Funds."

Haqqani Network is blamed for several attacks in Afghanistan, including the 2008 bombing of the Indian embassy in the war-torn country that killed 58 people.

US Congressman Ted Poe, a lawmaker from Texas, published a note on Twitter that said he is "pleased to see the Administration bring our misguided policy on Pakistan into review and am encouraged by this step revoking funding to our Benedict Arnold Ally."

Poe is referring to the general Benedict Arnold who switched sides during the American Revolutionary War. Poe is chair of the 'terrorism, nonproliferation, and trade' subcommittee of the US's foreign affairs committee.
