Nelliyampathy Cut off from Mainland

PALAKKAD:  Nelliyampathy was cut off from the mainland for more than six hours on Friday after more than seven trees were uprooted in the rain and wind and fell on the roads. Around seven trees fell on the Kundarachola-Marappalam stretch of Pothundy-Nelliyampathy road. A KSRTC bus which was caught in the middle of this stretch got held up during this period.

Locals, fire force personnel from Alathur fire station, police and forest personnel were engaged in removing the tree trunks from the road. The traffic was restored around 1 pm.

Rain continued unabated on Friday also. The loss in last one week in Palakkad district has been put at Rs 15.78 crore. In the agriculture sector alone losses were to the tune of Rs 15.04 crore. An area of 335.786 hectares of  agriclture has been affected.

Due to heavy rains, 42 houses in Palakkad taluk, estimated loss of Rs 4.60 lakh, 117 houses in Pattambi taluk, loss of Rs 18.35 lakh, 54 in Ottappalam taluk, loss of Rs 7.19 lakh, 73 in Alathur taluk, loss of  Rs 8.80 lakh, 33 in Chittur taluk, loss of Rs 4.01 lakh and 182 houses in Mannarkkad taluk, in which comes Attappadi, loss Rs 30.26 lakh, were partially damaged. Total loss is estimated at Rs 72.47 lakh.
