BENGALURU:Got a script in mind, but clueless on how to turn it into a play? Don’t worry, the Bangalore Little Theatre (BLT) has got you covered.
The team’s workshop production Sanjukta, aims to promote new voices in theatre. “At the workshop we teach the participant the simple nuances of how a production works, what is the process of selecting actors, how to set up a production, how to turn a story into a play,” explains Archana Kariappa, production coordinator of Sanjukta.
The theatre group claims to have a track record of encouraging new writing for stage and actively supporting new directors. BLT had previously presented directors training programme in the city.
“Participants mail us the script of their interest and our team sits down and exchanges ideas and views on it. And then the workshop is set in motion,” says Archana.
First-time playwright, Viji Shashikant is being coached by the team for two months now.
“The current workshop is designed for a first-time playwright. It usually takes close to two and a half months to put together a play,” adds Archana.
The team gave Viji direction on how to go about the process of putting a play.
“Viji is the writer, director and plays one of the characters in the play,” adds Archana.
The production Sanjukta will be on stage for the viewers this weekend in the city.
The play is about 39-year-old lawyer Sanjukta. She is unmarried and lives with her old mother and a younger unmarried sister. She is fairly content with her life and is invariably dressed in salwar-kameezes, functional and not very stylish.
When the younger sister announces that she is getting married, her best friend Parveen eggs Sanjukta on to advertise in the newspaper for a groom. To everyone’s surprise, she gets many replies.
With Parveen’s help, Sanju short-lists three possible candidates. Will she find her soul mate and marry him, is the question on everyone’s mind. And if this got your curiosity levels high, catch the play in the city at KEA Prabhath Rangamandira and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
The BLT team is also looking forward to a more formal training opportunity for writers in playwriting and dramaturgy too in the near future.Preparations are on for a professional course with international collaborations.
