BENGALURU: Roads under BBMP limits are set to get a plastic finish soon. Despite a ban on plastic, its use continues to be rampant across the city and the disposal of plastic continues to be a problem. Considering this, the state government has decided to use plastic in road works. An official order will be issued in this regard on Monday.
The decision was taken at a meeting held on Saturday which was chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad said, “So far, we have recovered 1 lakh kg of plastic and collected a penalty of `1.67 crore from those who sell plastic illegally. But we have no powers to file cases against them.”
The commissioner mentioned that they have submitted a proposal to the Union government for the civic agency to get rights to file cases against those who violate the rules.
Past example
This is not the first time that plastic is being used. Almost six years ago, while constructing roads inside Bangalore University’s Jnana Bharathi campus, university authorities and BBMP officials decided to use plastic waste. “The roads were in bad condition. It’s been 6 years and the road is in good condition,” said an official of BU.
