BENGALURU: Terrace gardens seem to have become a thing of the past now in the city. The new trend in the green space that is picking up is mini garden. More and more people are now decorating their homes with mini garden which requires less maintenance.
Harshita Das, the founder of The Bubble room, says that mini gardens are an easy decor to add to the house. After terrarium plants, mini gardens are the next big thing getting popular in the city. "Regular plants such as jade and palm are used for decor except the fact that they are their miniature versions," says Harshita who bought her first mini garden four years ago .A mother-daughter duo, Vydehi Kadur and Nirmala, first learned about a mini garden 20 years ago.
They got fascinated by the concept which was already popular in other countries. In 2013, they finally decided to start their own venture, Muddy Waters, that now serves 50 to 70 clients on a monthly basis. "We receive clients who want a mini garden for a wedding or a birthday party and home decors," says Vydehi who's business has been picking up in the past two years.
While these are miniatures, the garden still requires 10 minutes of care every day. The soil, in which they are grown, tends to dry up faster. Hence, they need to be watered and exposed to some sunlight. However, its maintenance also depends on the type of plants. Most hybrids of ficus plants can be either indoor or outdoor. Other common miniature plants used are podocartus, snow bushes, creepers and shrubs such as alternanthera which suit a mini setup, explains Vydehi. The mini garden also produces therapeutic benefits - it is calm and soothing - due to the greenery it adds to the room.
“There are people who want to decorate their office and even parents who want to gift their children a beginner’s guide to gardening, which is becoming a trend lately,” adds Vydehi who is a full-time creative designer. Due to the increase in clients, the duo decided to conduct workshops to help others gain an insight into the miniature setup. The workshop, hosted by Bubble room, will be held on June 17.
