CHENNAI: Infrastructure player Hindustan Construction Company announced on Monday it had received an order worth Rs 763.57 crore from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The company will construct a Fast Reactor Fuel Cycle facility for the Centre, which is the second largest nuclear research establishment in India, after the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai.

According to the company, the scope of work includes the construction of Nuclear Safety Compliant Structures for the fuel processing plant, which in turn serves Kalpakkam’s Fast Breeder Reactors and allied facilities including civil, electrical and mechanical work.

This is not HCC’s first contract for the nuclear research centre. Prior to this, the company had received three contracts for the construction of administrative blocks, township and metallic fuel plant from IGCAR. HCC has experience serving other establishments of the Department of Atomic Energy, having undertaken the first phase of the Integrated Nuclear Recycle Plant of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tarapur and for Nuclear Power Corporation of India project in Rajasthan.

“We are happy to receive this contract for building Fast Reactor Fuel Cycle Facility at Kalpakkam”, HCC President and CEO-E&C Arun Karambelkar said, adding that with the company’s experienced team, they were “confident of delivering the job on time with precision in quality, safety and state-of-the-art technology”. HCC expects the project to be completed in 48 months.
