NEW DELHI: Top Communications Ministry officials will announce a plan next week to protect the 85 million subscribers of Aircel across the country, following the Supreme Court’s direction on Friday, restraining Maxis Group from “selling or trading” 2G spectrum licenses, as per the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Universal license conditions for telecom sector provides the Department of Telecommunications to stop services of an operator under certain conditions.

“It is a tricky situation, but the directions of the SC has to be followed. But consumers also need to be protected. With multiple operators available, it should not be an issue,” said Jajjit Bhattacharya, telecom expert and Partner, KPMG. Aircel’s spokesperson also said that no statement has been made. However, a top executive said that the interest of consumers will be protected.

“Mobiles are critical tools in our life. Many financial services are linked to it,” added N K Goyal, Founder, CMIE.
