Nokia sets up new facility for 5G, big data in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Finnish multinational company Nokia opened its new research and development (R&D) facility in the city on Wednesday. The facility, set up at Manyata Tech Park in the city, is spread over 16,000 sq ft. It will be dedicated to research on 5G network and big data, apart from development of Voice-over LTE (VoLTE) and applications.

Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Malik, vice-president and head of India market, Nokia, said Bengaluru is one of the top four R&D facilities globally for the company. “India is a strategic market for Nokia from both sales and research perspective,” Malik added. The centre, which was inaugurated by Priyank Kharge, minister of state for IT, biotechnology and tourism, Karnataka, already employs 6,000 staff and this number would further increase over the coming year, the company said.

According to Rupa Santosh, head of the technology centre, the expansion of our presence in India is a testimony to our deep commitment to harnessing the enormous potential of local talent for research and development.

He said “The centre will provide a huge opportunity for bright engineers to work on upcoming technologies which will change the way we live and work.”   Nokia has a partnership with Bharti Airtel and BSNL to develop their their 5G networks.
