BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday announced that his government will come to the rescue of Mango growers who are suffering due to sharp fall in the prices by purchasing mangoes at Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 2500 per quintal.

Replying to issue raised in the Legislative Assembly, Mr Kumaraswamy said that Mango pulp making the major plant in Andhra Pradesh is facing a glut due to overproduction and similarly another big plant in Maharashtra has also stopped buying as 50,000 tons of Mango pulp has remained unsold.

However, Karnataka Government has decided to come to the rescue of the farmers who are affected.

The State government has announced the MSP and purchase of mangos will begin immediately. So the agitating farmers should withdraw their stir," said Venkatesha Reddy, Minister for Agriculture.

The farmers of Srinivasapura, in Kolar District of Karnataka, today observed a day-long bandh demanding government intervention.

Srinivasapura is the major mango growing area in the State.

The bandh had evoked a total response with business establishments downing their shutters in support of the agitation. No untoward incident was reported during the bandh.
