Sandeep’s father refuses to meet VS, Kodiyeri

BANGALORE: K Unnikrishnan , father of Sandeep Unnikrishnan who died fighting terrorists in Mumbai, refused to meet Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan here on Sunday.

Following widespread criticism of the Kerala Government’s failure to officially acknowledge the supreme sacrifice made by Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Achuthanandan and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan visited Major Sandeep’s residence in Bangalore on Sunday. The two, who had flown in from Delhi, arrived at Sandeep’s residence around 8.15 pm.Aggrieved by the loss of his only son, Major Sandeep’s father K Unnikirishnan did not wish for any undue publicity."He died for the country,” he said.

Defence Minister A K Antony had earlier spoken to Sandeep’s family over the phone.

The Chief Minister met Sandeep’s mother and consoled her. However, Sandeep’s father asked the Chief Minister and the Home Minister to leave. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy had earlier written to Achuthanandan asking him to honour the slain Army Major and help his family. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was cremated in Bangalore on Saturday.
