If you are one of those who jumps lanes in the crowded city roads to pick up speed, think twice. Lane discipline programme is being viewed by the Bangalore Traffic Police as a step forward in arresting traffic violations and in reducing fatalities on the roads of Bangalore.
Road markings and traffic cones have been installed in 12 important junctions across the City as part of this project. But after a few days of implementation of this programme, citizen’s indiscipline has surfaced to the fore with many traffic cones damaged to no end that clearly shows the reckless and unruly behavior of the motorists.
Traffic police officials believe that the damages have been caused simply because motorists are still unaware of the installation of traffic cones at junctions. “The separators installed in the lanes have already been damaged since people are not aware of their existence still. But once they get used to it, they will follow lane discipline,” said MA Saleem, Additional Commissioner (Traffic and Security).
A sum of Rs 100 will be levied as fine for the first offence and a subsequent penalty of `300 will be imposed, Traffic Police officials say and believe that this simple measure will ease congestion and travel time.
The project is being implemented in select roads of the city : Mahatma Gandhi Circle, Anil Kumble Circle, Basaveshwara Circle, Shivananda Circle, Cauvery Emporium Junction, Bhashyam Circle, South End Circle, KR Road-Cubbon Road junction, UCO Bank junction, Trinity Circle, Webb’s junction and the Sony World junction.
Not following lane discipline is one of the major as well as rising causes for accidents on city roads. “We have to make lane discipline a habit,” concludes ACP (Traffic).
