A severe cold wave is sweeping across the state and mercury levels have dropped to a record low at many places.
Temperature in Bangalore and most parts of south and north interior Karnataka dropped by three to eight degree Celsius below normal.
It is turning out to be a biting winter in Bangalore city with the minimum temperature dropping to 13.4 degree Celsius on Thursday.
Though this is not the lowest ever recorded in the city, this is just the beginning of the season.
In the month of November, Bangalore had recorded the lowest temperature of 9.6 degree Celsius in 1967.
“Within the city, there is a three degree difference in temperature. While BIAL Airport recorded 10.2 degree Celsius on Thursday morning, it was around 13 degrees near HAL, Yelahanka and other areas in the city. This is due to cloudlessness and low moisture in the sky,” said B Puttanna, director in-charge at IMD, Bangalore.
According to IMD, even the north-east monsoon is weak this year. Meanwhile, Chamarajnagar recorded a minimum temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius while it was 11.2 degree Celsius in Mysore — 0.2 degrees lower than the record normal.
Raichur recorded the minimum temperature of 11.4 degree Celsius — the lowest in the past 120 years during November.
According to IMD, the cold wave conditions would prevail in some parts of interior Karnataka over the next few days and temperatures are likely to dip further in the coming days.
