Assassin’s Creed 3

You play as Connor Kenway, caught smack dab in the middle of the American War of Independence. Let’s get into it, shall we?

Assassin’s Creed 3 is a much awaited title, with people wondering if this is the end. The game’s previews and demos have been very impressive. As Connor, you now have access to several new weapons, and new battle styles. Now equipped with a bow, traditional dual blades, a tomahawk, a pistol, rope darts and several other weapons, your arsenal is more impressive. While Ezio and Altair were more flashy in their attacks, Connor’s attacks are more brutal street brawling attack style. Enemies are smarter, such that you need to be very careful in how you deal with them. In the old games, you could take on a group of 20 guards with no problems; here, however, if the group is bigger than seven you are in trouble.

A nice addition is the counter skill. Before an enemy attacks you are prompted to counter, which then can lead to a counter kill or a disarm. Stronger enemies can stop your counters and damage you back. Sometimes enemies set up a firing squad, and you can grab a close-by enemy and use him as a human shield. That I found was a fun technique. Rope darts are your best friend, throw them at an enemy and you get to pull them towards you which makes killing them easier. If you are on a platform, throw the rope dart and jump down, resulting in your hanging your enemy. Naval Battles is a new addition. You get access to the ship called the Aquila, this ship can be used for naval missions, which are really fun! Sail the seas destroying Templar ships and completing missions. You can even upgrade the ship with more weapon types, cannons and armour. There are certain missions between memory sequences where you play as Desmond, which are fun, uncovering a hidden secret to Save the World.

However, the storyline is extremely vague. Connor’s motivations are weak. While you get to take part in some historic battles your participation is at a minimum. Main enemies are laughably easy to kill. The Rope Darts make missions a cake walk, since even if an enemy is running if you have them in range you can throw the dart and stop them dead in their tracks. Glitches galore! Several times I have been stuck in the middle of battle, my attacks stop, and I am unable to attack any more. While riding a horse, I get stuck on a pebble which then leads me to lose my mission. While the bow and arrow is supposed to be a stealth weapon, soon as I use it, I have the entire British army after me. At a time when I’m just walking by an area, I’m suddenly under attack for no reason. While an economy system exists, you can completely ignore it, unless you need to buy more arrows or rope darts.

Otherwise it’s quite useless. The characters have no depth, I couldn’t feel a connection with any character in the game. The ending is anti-climatic. Even when you are supposed to have saved the world... you feel nothing. While it’s impressive graphically as well as gameplay wise. It doesn’t have the effect I felt when I played the

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood game. A poor effort from Ubisoft.
