Arekere Lake breaches, sewage floods layout

Express News Service

Sewage entered into 30 houses at ING Vysya Bank Layout on Bannerghatta Road following breach of Arekere Lake in the early hours of Tuesday.

The sewage entered into clean water sumps of many houses and spread across the area.

According to sources, sewage had collected in Arekere Lake due to the spurt of residential buildings in the vicinity.

On the receipt of information, MLA Satish Reddy, visited the area and lashed out at the BDA for not keen on building drains around the lake to prevent sewage mixing with clean water.

“The BDA is only interested in forming new layouts.

Of late, a number of apartments are coming up and sewage is being let into the lake,” Reddy alleged.

As of now, the BDA has only built a fence around the 100-year-old lake.

He said both Arekere and Sarakki Lakes need immediate attention to prevent such flooding in the future.

Sumps and tanks in these houses were later cleaned with jetting machines and disinfection process would be carried out soon, the MLA told Express.

“We have supplied water tanks of 3,000 litres each for the residents to use till the sumps are cleaned and are ready to use,” he added.
