The new car pooling awareness drive to be launched by the Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) in the third week of January boasts of bringing down traffic problems in select areas by almost 25 per cent.

Targeting the areas dominated by IT companies, multinational companies and call centres, BTP had invited suggestions from people to make the initiative work. After the failure of the same campaign by BTP in 2006, this time around the department has gone a step further to tie up with various organisations that are already in the field of car pooling.

“We had invited suggestions by people from all walks of life to reduce the traffic problem. We have received over 145 suggestions through social media and some professionals that are already doing some work in this domain have given us more suggestions. Overall we have about 50 concrete plans for making carpooling work. We will now discuss these solutions with an expert panel consisting of pioneers in the field of traffic management and devise the plan for the carpooling awareness campaign. The campaign will be kicked off in the third week of this month,” M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) told Express.

Areas that will be in main focus of this campaign are ITPL, Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Marathalli, Silk Board junction and Bannerghatta Road. The department first wants to gauge the success of the campaign surrounding IT parks and will then devise a similar plan for other areas.
