Ambuthirtha, an unexplored heaven of Karnataka

Sudheendra Karavalur

Located 15 kilometers from the village of Thirthahalli, Shimoga District, Ambuthirtha is a perfect getaway for city dwellers.

Covered with lush greenery and the birthplace of river Sharavathi, Ambuthirtha is a must visit. The length of the river Sharavathi is 128 kms and it meets the Arabian Sea at Honnavara in Uttara Kannada district. This river is used extensively to generate hydroelectricity. There are three hydroelectric power stations at Sharavathi, Linganamakki and Gerusoppa.

The legend: This is considered a holy place by locals as a Shivalinga is installed here with a temple built around it, under which Sharavathi begins her journey. It was here that Lord Rama pierced the earth with his bow and arrow (Ambu) for water (Thirtha) to quench the thirst of his wife Sita, and hence this place got the name Ambuthirtha. This place is also known as ‘Rameshwaram’ where pilgrims from all across the country come.

Other attractions: From here the river moves down to Linganamakki dam which is 65 kms from Ambuthirtha. The Linganamakki power station has been operational since 1948. It was one of the largest hydroelectric stations in India at that time. Now, it serves as a  small source of electric power for Karnataka.

Spectacular falls: Originating from the Sharavathi River, Jog Falls is the second highest waterfall in India. Here, water falls from a height of 830 feet, a spectacular sight.  Surrounded by green hills and thick jungles, it is a luxury sitting by the falls and just admiring the miracle of nature.

This place is also a treat for trekking enthusiasts. One can go for long walks in the surrounding forest area.

The aroma of pepper and vanilla wafts through the air. An entire day can be spent roaming aimlessly in the wilderness.

On your way out, you can even pick up a packet of freshly grown coffee.  The Tourism Department has built steps from the view point till the bottom of the hill, where the waterfall can be seen on the opposite side. You have to climb down  approximately 1500 steps to reach the bottom of the hill. Cheap hotels and home stays can be easily found in the area.

If you want to see the falls in its true glory start out early in the morning.  With the rays playing hide and seek and birds giving a beautiful background score, the falls are a sight to behold. Also, don’t miss the recently started ‘Musical Fountain and Laser Show’ at the falls.
